Contour Lab

A design practice for places people need to find their way through.

We are three people in Rotterdam. Most of our work is wayfinding, identity and editorial systems for museums, parks and small publishers.

Selected work

Practice

We take on four or five projects a year and stay on them from the first survey to the last proof. Every project starts the same way: we walk the site, read what has been written about it, and draw what is already there before proposing anything new.

Drawing is how we think. Sketches, maps and full-size mock-ups go up on the wall early and stay there, so that a decision about a sign, a page or a colour can be argued about in the open rather than settled in a file.

We read everything that comes in and answer within a week. If you are writing about a project, a rough budget and a date help more than a brief does.
